You glance at the Salik balance and it's gone again — faster than last week, same commute, different number. It isn't a glitch: Dubai now charges by the time of day, and once you can see the pattern you can plan around it and stop overpaying. Here's how the toll actually works — and how all that time on the road ties back to your car cover.
What Salik is
Salik ("clear" in Arabic) is Dubai's barrier-free toll system. Cameras read your plate as you pass a gate and deduct the toll automatically from your Salik account. There are no booths and no need to slow down.
Toll times — peak, off-peak and free
Dubai moved to variable (dynamic) tolling, so the charge depends on the time you cross a gate:
| Window | Charge |
|---|---|
| Peak hours (busiest mornings & evenings) | Higher toll |
| Off-peak (standard daytime) | Standard toll |
| Overnight (late night to early morning) | Toll-free |
The exact hours and dirham amounts are set by Salik and updated periodically — check the live rate card on salik.ae before you plan a route, especially if you commute across several gates.
How to register and recharge
- Open a Salik account online or in the Salik app and link your vehicle plate (and tag where required).
- Top up by card, the app, or UAE PASS. Keep a positive balance — unpaid crossings accrue fines.
- Track crossings and statements in the app.
What this has to do with your car insurance
Salik tells a story about your driving — distance, routes and exposure. While the toll itself is separate from insurance, the bigger picture matters: more time on the road is more risk, and an unpaid-fine record can hold up your registration renewal — which you cannot do without valid cover. Keeping fines clear and your record clean supports your No-Claims Discount. Explore GIG Gulf car insurance, and see our guide to Dubai traffic fines & black points.
"Our customers spend real hours on Dubai's roads — that exposure is exactly what good motor cover is for. We reward clean records and we're built to get people back on the road fast when something happens."Franck Heimburger, Chief Personal Lines Officer, GIG GulfDraft quote — not approved · Candace to confirm with Franck before publish

Is Salik free at night?
Under Dubai's variable tolling, crossings in the late-night/early-morning window are toll-free. Confirm the exact hours on salik.ae as they can change.
How much is a Salik crossing?
It depends on the time — a higher charge at peak, a standard charge off-peak, and free overnight. Check the current rate card on salik.ae.
What happens if my Salik balance runs out?
Crossings with an insufficient balance accrue fines. Keep the account topped up via the app or website.
Does Salik affect my car insurance?
Not directly — but unpaid road/toll fines can block registration renewal, and you can't renew registration without valid insurance. A clean record supports your premium.
